Parents & Family: Succeed w/ my Student

Students need to get connected. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is for students to ask for help and talk to the faculty, academic advisors, and other students. Expectations in college are very different from the requirements in high school, and spending enough quality time on tasks is extremely important. Attending and participating in class are very important elements in succeeding at IUPUI.

While students sometimes need to study alone, most successful students also use campus resources and attend mentoring sessions, which are small group-facilitated study sessions (located on the second floor of Joseph T. Taylor Hall). Mentoring sessions are a supplement to attending class and afford students the opportunity to review, discuss, and problem-solve as a team. Successful students get connected to other students and use their peers as a resource. They learn the necessary skills to balance their academic, work, family, and community responsibilities.

Some of the most common reasons why students do not succeed are that they are working too many hours, they do not spend time with other students reviewing course material, and they do not attend class.
